The Ceramic Mural Tile Project, led by artist Dermot Burgess, brought the beauty of nature and creativity together in a unique community artwork. Participants from the Lalor Centre, Baltinglass, and young people from In Sync, West Wicklow, pressed plants into wet clay slabs, capturing delicate botanical patterns. These slabs were transformed into tiles, bisque-fired, and enhanced with mason stains and metal oxides before being glazed and fired. The plants used were picked with kind permission from Tearmann Community Gardens. The finished tiles were mounted as a complete mural and are currently displayed in the Baltinglass Library.
As Dermot shared in his final report: "The community involvement of this project shows others that anyone can be involved in creating art and things of beauty."
This inspiring project highlights the power of collaboration, community, and creativity.
Dermot Burgess is also Chairman and founder of B.Art. Baltinglass Community Art Group.
